Clove Bud essential oil

  • Botanical (and family):

    Syzygium Aromaticum, or, Eugenia Caryophyllata.. Family Myrtaceae

  • Distribution:
    Native to Indonesia. Cultivated in Madagascar, Philippines, Molluca and Zanzibar.
  • Description of plant:

    An evergreen columnar tree to thirty feet with reddish-brown nail-shaped flower buds and small grey leaves. The Latin “clavus” means nail-shaped.

  • Extraction:

    Water distillation of the buds, leaves, or stalks and stems.

  • Charactersitics:
    A pale yellow liquid with characteristic sweet-spicy-woody odour.
    BASE NOTE

 

  • Odour effects:

         Stimulating, pungent.

  • Cautions:

    A definite skin irritant. Use in massage only in minute doses.

  • Main chemical constituents:
    Beta-caryophyene, humulenes – 6%
    Eugenol, aceteugenol, isoeugenol – 90%

 

  • Properties and indications:

    MIND:
    Strengthens memory and lifts depression. Useful for lethargy.
    BODY:
    Benefits digestive system. Effective against vomiting, intestinal spasm, dyspepsia, and parasites. Tonic effect on kidneys, stomach and spleen. Renowned pain-relieving properties i.e. toothache, rheumatism, arthritis. Has been used for tuberculosis, asthma and bronchitis. Known aphrodisiac.
    SKIN:
    May alleviate skin sores, ulcers.

 

  • Other uses:

    Dental preparations, toothpaste, soaps, perfumes, printing ink, glue and varnish.

  • Blends well with:
  • Basil, Benzoin, Black pepper, Cinnamon, Citronella, Orange, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Rosemary.
